It is more important to say “tachanun” after shemoneh essreiy with nothing intervening, than to say “aleinu” together with the tzibbur.

Thus, if one finds oneself right after shemoneh essreiy (of Shacharis or Minchah) and the tzibbur is saying “aleinu”, one should say “tachanun”.
