Many say that the minhag of an aufrauf comes from the Medrash which states that when Shlomo HaMelech built the Beis HaMikdash he made a special gate for chassanim to walk through, so that people seeing him would bless him with a happy life and children. When the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, it became the minhag that the chosson come to the Mikdash Me’at (the Shul) so that people could pray for him and bless him.
