The Rema in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 61:26 says that the first possuk of k’ri’as sh’ma should be said in a loud voice by the entire tzibbur. In 62:5, the Shulchan Aruch says that the sh’li’ach tzibbur should say that first possuk especially loud, leading the tzibbur, so that the tzibbur will now say it together, loudly, accepting HaShem’s sovereignty upon themselves together.

In the MB and BH in siman 154, we find three distinct levels of sanctification or dedication:
- KEDUSHA: Sifrei Torah, tefillin, and mezuzuot are considered to have actual “kedusha” – holiness. These are not profane items which were then dedicated to holy use but rather items whose very creation is predicated on an intention to invest them with sanctity.
