What is Tachanun? After the sin of the eigel hazahav, Moshe Rabbeinu davened to HaShem for forgiveness in 3 different positions: standing, sitting, and falling on his face (Devarim 10:10, 9:9 & 9:18). And so we daven birchos kri’as shema sitting; shemoneh essrei, standing; and tachanun, falling on one’s face.

The common custom is for women to omit Tachanun.
