A person may daven with eyes closed, or looking into the siddur, whichever enables more kavanah. But whoever looks at anything but the siddur during Shemonah Esrei, besides having done something ossur, does not merit to see the Shechinah when departing from this world. 

Once again, we read in the Torah about the greatest of people (in this case, Nadav and Avihu) who were severely punished for acting inappropriately in a mokom kodosh. A mokom kodosh demands behavior commensurate with its kedushah!
