During chazaras hashatz, one must stand from the beginning of kedusha until ha’keil hakadosh; during modim d’rabonon; and during birkas kohanim. During the rest of the chazan’s repetition, it is preferable to stand.

The Gemara says “the awe we feel for the Beis Hamikdash is not really awe for the building or the place–it is a manifestation of our fear of HaShem.”That same point should be made regarding our conduct in Shul–how we act reflects the  degree of  our yir’as shamayim!
