The “simple” meaning of “pesukei d’zimra” is verses of praise, of song.
On a deeper level, the meforshim explain that by reciting these pesukim of praise. one severs and cuts off the spiritual forces (think of this as any spiritual hindrance) which try to block his tefillos. In that sense, then, zimra means (as we know from the pesukim of shemitta) to prune, or to cut off.
