The community research, lecture, and Kashrus Report are presented as a public service by Kehillas Beis Tefillah Yonah Avraham of RBS (www.btya.org), sponsored, in part, by Jo’s Club.
The First Kashrus Lecture
On a hot July 4th day, nearly 300 men and women from Bet Shemesh attended a very informative lecture on Kashrus.
The lecture, delivered by R’ Yechiel Spira of Jerusalem Kosher News, gave deep insight into the need for a proper Hashgacha on stores, bakeries, restaurants, basically any place that sells food.
The lecture was given twice, once in the morning for women only, and then again in the evening for women and men.
R’ Spira showed examples of tens of forged, fake, out-of-date, or otherwise “Passul” teudot Kashrut from several different kinds of “food”institutions in the Jerusalem area, many in “Charedi” neighborhoods, too. He opened the eyes of everyone who attended the lecture.
The lecture was spearheaded by HoRav Malinowitz, Sh”lita, and took place under the initiative of Kehillas Beis Tefillah Yonah Avraham. Eli Gherman did the behind-the-scenes work, and Jo’s Club was the corporate sponsor.
At the end of the lecture, the participants were given a chance to ask questions.
There was a groundswell of, “if this is what is happening in Yerushalayim, what is going on in our city?” Rav Malinowitz and others are pushing for R’ Spira to come back to Bet Shemesh and take some time to review our local institutions and then to come back and report on his findings in our city.
Stay tuned!

R’ Spira (www.jerusalemkoshernews.com) wrote the following article on his Web site after the lecture:
JKN Teams with RBS (Ramat Beit Shemesh)
23 Tammuz 5770
July 5, 2010
I am usually not at a loss for words, but my experience yesterday in the community of Ramat Beit Shemesh left me searching for the correct adjectives to describe the exuberance and genuineness of the community’s desire to learn just how one can navigate the Israeli kosher scene – how to enjoy eating out and finding the supermarket bargains without compromising one’s kashrut standard.
In truth, many of us, including long-time residents of Eretz Yisrael learned they really did not know what the standard is, since that requires understanding the system, which many do not.

Stay tuned for the NEXT PART of this initiative…bigger and better, IY”H.
